Maria D’Abate

Maria D’Abate first appears at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, between 1937 and 1940.  In America Maria D’Abate was known Mary Caste.

Maria D’Abate, daughter of Felice Antonio D’Abate and Teresa Covatta, was born on October 28, 1869, at Frosolone, Isernia Province, Molise, Italy.  She was baptized on October 28, 1869 at Frosolone, Italy.  Maria married Domenico Antonio Castagna, son of Antonio Castagna and Anna Filomena Fraraccio, on July 26, 1896, at Frosolone, Italy.  Maria D’Abate died on November 16, 1961, at Frosolone, Italy, at age 92.

Maria D’Abate first immigrated to the United States on July 28, 1902, at age 32.  She was travelling to Boston, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  Maria and her son, Giovanni Castagna, were joining the family’s father, Domenico Antonio Castagna, in Pennsylvania.  They arrived in the United States aboard the ship SS Trave.

The Castagna family returned to Italy in 1906.

Maria D’Abate is cited on a passenger ship manifest re-entering the United States on December 17, 1920, at age 51.  She was travelling to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  Maria and her daughter, Lucia Castagna, were returning to the United States after a 14 year absence. They were joining the family’s father, Domenico Antonio Castagna, in Pittsburgh.  They arrived in the United States aboard the ship SS LaTouraine.

Maria D’Abate and her husband returned to Italy sometime in the 1920’s.

Maria D’Abate is cited on a passenger ship manifest re-entering the United States in 1937.  Maria returned to the United States to visit her sons, who were living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and her daughter, who was living in Painesville, Ohio.  She arrived in the United States aboard the ship SS Conte DiSavola.

Maria D’Abate was enumerated for the 1940 Census of the United States, on April 23, 1940, living at 564 South State Street, Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, as a mother-in-law of Felice D’Abate.  Her name was recorded as Mary Casti.

Maria D’Abate returned to Italy sometime after World War II.

Maria D’Abate was widowed by the death of her husband, Domenico Antonio Castagna, in March, 1960, at Frosolone, Italy.

The four known children of Maria D’Abate and Domenico Antonio Castagna were as follows

1.    Antonio Castagna was born on May 20, 1897, at Frosolone, Italy.  He married Maria Laura Colasessano, daughter of Liborio Colasessano and Maria Donata Colarusso, on April 22, 1922, at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  Antonio died in November, 1978, at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, at age 81.

2.    Felice Antonio Castagna was born on January 20, 1899, at Frosolone, Italy.  He married Maria Assunta Colasessano, daughter of Liborio Colasessano and Maria Donata Colarusso, on April 22, 1922, at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  Felice Antonio died on February 9, 1997, at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, at age 98.

3.    Giovanni Castagna was born on April 1, 1901, at Frosolone, Italy.

4.   Lucia Castagna was born on September 10, 1903, at McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  She married Felice D’Abate, son of Giacomo D’Abate and Maria Felicia LaGamba, in 1925.  Lucia died on July 24, 1980, at Lakewood Hospital, Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, at age 76.  Her body was interred at Riverside Cemetery at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.
