Carmelo Diate

Carmelo Diate first appears in the Painesville, Ohio, area before 1895.  He was among the first Italians living in Painesville.

Carmelo Diate was born in Italy.  He became a citizen of the United States on November 5, 1895. Carmelo resided at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, when he was naturalized.  William Storrs was Mr. Diate’s witness for naturalization.  Carmelo most likely was employed by the Storrs and Harrison Nursery.

Mr. Diate’s name at birth and place of birth are not known.  He may have been Carmelo DiGati and may have been born in Montemaggiore Belsito, Sicily.  He may have been the Charles DiGati who was an informant on the death certificate of Angelo Tripi in 1918.

Carmelo may have been related to other Painesville Italians:  Andrea DiGati, Onofrio DiGati, or Angela DiGati (wife of Filippo Pace).
