Nicandro Cardegna

Nicandro Cardegna first appears at Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio, in 1894.  He arrived in Painesville with his older brother, Cosmo Cardegna, and their brother-law, Bartolomeo Colavecchio.  They were among the first Italians to live at Painesville, Ohio.  In America Nicandro Cardegna was known Nicandro Cardina.

Nicandro Cardegna, son of Giuseppe Cardegna and Annantonia Colavecchio, was born on April 19, 1856, at Frosolone, Isernia Province, Molise, Italy.  He was baptized on April 20, 1856 at Santa Pietro Apostolo Chiesa, at Frosolone, Italy.  Nicandro married Teresa DiCristofaro, daughter of Nicola DiCristofaro and Maria Nicola Palangio, on July 31, 1884, at Frosolone, Italy.  He died on March 19, 1931 at Lake County Memorial Hospital at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, due to an infected knee (septicemia).  His body was interred at Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery at Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio.

Nicandro Cardegna immigrated to the United States on March 16, 1894, at age 37.  Nicandro entered the United States at the Port of New York City aboard the ship SS Kronprinz Frederick Wilhelm.  He probably migrated to Painesville, Ohio, shortly after he immigrated to the United States.

Nicardro Cardegna’s wfie, Teresa DiCristofaro, and children, Anna Antonia Cardegna and Giuseppe Cardegna, immigrated to the United States in 1897.  They joined Nicandro in Painesville, Ohio.

Nicandro Cardegna became a citizen of the United States in 1899.  Nicandro resided at Lake County, Ohio, when he was naturalized.

Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated for the 1900 Census of the United States, on June 22, 1900, living at Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio, as a head of household.  Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated as Nichordo Gardegno.

Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated for the 1910 Census of the United States, on April 23, 1910, living at Fairport Road, Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio, as a head of household.  Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated as Mike Cardina.

Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated for the 1920 Census of the United States, on January 9, 1920, living at Fairport-Nursery Road, Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio, as a head of household.  Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated as Nic Andrew Cardegna.

Nicandro Cardegna was widowed by the death of his wife, Teresa DiCristofaro, on September 19, 1923, at Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio.

Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated for the 1930 Census of the United States, on April 16, 1930, living at Fairport Road, Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio, as a father of Joe M. Cardina.  Nicandro Cardegna was enumerated as Nick Cardina.

Mr. Cardina was a long term employee of the Storrs and Harrison Nursery Company.

Nicandro Cardegna was a focal point for immigration of Frosolonesi to Painesville, Ohio.  He is cited on at least nine passenger ship manifests as the “person joining in the United States”.  His brother, Cosmo Cardegna and Filippo Cardegna, lived in Painesville.  His brother-in-law, Domenico Palangio, also lived in Painesville.

The four known children of Nicandro Cardegna and Teresa DiCristofaro were as follows:

1. Anna Antonia Cardegna was born on June 17, 1885, at Frosolone, Italy.  She married Giovanni Scacciavillani, son of Felice Scacciavillano and Maria Giovanna Vitolone, on December 14, 1905 at Saint Mary Catholic Church at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.  Anna died on August 7, 1969 at Lake County Memorial Hospital at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, at age 84, of pneumonia.  Her body was interred at Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery at Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio.

2. Giuseppe Cardegna was born on February 18, 1888, at Frosolone, Italy.  He married Giuditta Palumbo, daughter of Michele Arcangelo Palumbo and Maria Carmina Padula, on November 27, 1920 at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.  Giuseppe died on January 16, 1977 at 868 North State Street at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, at age 88, of a myocardial Infarction.  His body was interred at Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery at Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio.

3. Nicola Cardegna was born in October, 1893, at Frosolone.  He most likely died as an infant, in Italy.

4. Mary Carmella Cardina was born on July 16, 1899, at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.  She married Andrew Lombardy, son of Donato Antonio Lombardi and Maria Giuseppa Battista, on September 25, 1919 at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.  Mary died on April 19, 1982 at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, at age 82.
