Giuseppe Cardegna

Giuseppe Cardegna first appears at Painesville, Lake County, Ohio in 1902.  Painesville, Ohio, was his destination when he immigrated to the United States.

Giuseppe Cardegna, son of Cosmo Cardegna and Felicia DiCristofaro, was born on March 27, 1885, at Frosolone, Isernia Province, Molise, Italy.  Giuseppe married Saveria Berardinelli, daughter of Carmine Berardinelli and Maria Teresa Mattarocci, about 1914.

Giuseppe Cardegna first immigrated to the United States on March 31, 1902, at age 17.  He was travelling to Painesville, Lake County, Ohio. He was joining his uncle, Nicandro Cardegna, in Painesville.  Giuseppe arrived in the United States at the Port of New York City aboard the ship SS Lahn.  He returned to Italy sometime in 1909.

Giuseppe Cardegna is cited on a passenger ship manifest re-entering the United States on September 27, 1910, at age 25.  He was travelling to Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.  He was joining his uncle, Nicandro Cardegna, in Painesville.  Giuseppe arrived in the United States at the Port of New York City aboard the ship SS Berlin.  He returned to Italy sometime in 1913.

Giuseppe Cardegna is cited on a passenger ship manifest re-entering the United States on March 11, 1915, at age 29.  He was travelling to Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.  He was joining his uncle, Nicandro Cardegna, in Painesville.  Giuseppe arrived in the United States at the Port of New York City aboard the ship SS Ancona.

Giuseppe probably returned to Italy after World War One.  He is not cited in the 1920 United States Census.  He probably lived with his Uncle Nicandro Cardegna when he was in the United States.  When Nicandro passed away in 1931 Giuseppe was incorrectly cited as Nicandro’s brother in Nicandro’s obituary.

Giuseppe Cardegna’s father, Cosmo Cardegna, was one of the first Italians to live in Painesville.  His paternal uncles, Nicandro Cardegna and Filippo Cardegna, lived in Painesville.  Giuseppe’s maternal uncles, Cristofaro DiCristofaro and Domenico DiCristofaro, lived in Painesville. His maternal aunts, Palma DiCristofaro and Teresa DiCristofaro immigrated to Painesville in 1897.
